K-House is an end-of-terrace, two-storey home located in a neighbourhood originally built for the Ministry of Defence in Waterbeach. The modest property lacked ground-floor living space, an additional bedroom, utility, downstairs shower room, study space, and strong connection to the outdoors. The client, a growing family, had outgrown the original 80 sqm layout across two floors but wanted to remain in the area, close to schools and work.
The redesign introduces a vertically stacked arrangement of interconnected rooms and adaptable spaces to meet both current and future needs, all within a unified volume. The design extends the existing gable shape, using a well-insulated timber structure clad in black timber and roof tiles to create a contemporary aesthetic that complements the existing terrace. The addition of triple glazing, brise soleil, and exposed finishes—featuring a mix of exposed plywood, painted brick from the original gable, and acoustic woodwool panels—reinforces the project’s sustainable ethos. The new layout fosters a strong visual and physical connection to the south- and west-facing garden while maximizing space to accommodate the family’s evolving requirements.
